VBS SonWorld: Day One

edit: uploaded some images, at the request of Fiona (I was suppose to upload it today, but I completely forgot because I was too busy petting the host family's dogs... more on that another time)

Weather: Foggy, then sunny

This is David, blogging for the Prince Rupert Missions Team. We finished the first day of VBS SonWorld Adventure, and we were all pretty tired. Today there were 23 kids present, and they were all quite energetic. According to Fiona, there were quite a few kids that came back from the last VBS, and the rest were new to VBS. The kids who went to last year's VBS said this year's theme didn't measure up to last years, but as Fiona just quoted: "We will do it better than last year."

For me, this is the first year I volunteered for the Prince Rupert Trip (although this is only the second time the missions trip is held) and the first time in a long while since I volunteered in VBS, so I was still somewhat nervous about what the kids would be like, but they are a friendly bunch, like the kids back in PMPGMBC. During Bible Story time, they zone out a bit, but they mean well. I think. According to Aunty Iris (who is in charge of arts & crafts), during arts & crafts, the older boys can't really sit still, but overall they were very good. They are full of energy, especially during games, they just can't listen to instructions and sit still at the same time. They are in need of alot of love and attention, so those of you reading right now, please pray for them.

After VBS was done, we had lunch at Myrna's home, a fellow sister in Christ at Cornerstone MB church. One thing I must confess is I'm still getting used to having only western food in my daily diet: I really can't live without rice and steamed Asian vegetables. Regardless, the food was great and I think I'll live (Even it's not Asian style, I still had steamed rice last nice ;)). Probably the biggest issue for me (and Karen) is western table manners, which is very different from Chinese table manners: while us Asian kids are told to grab your own portions of food yourself, western manners dictates we ask the person closest to the food to "pass it along to us". We are told by Wai Ho to not stand up while eating at the table, since it's impolite to do so. This is against everything I learned at my dinner table (dinner's a war at my place, we fight for portions), so it's hard to adapt. Karen as well.

When we finished lunch, we debriefed at the church again and prepared a bit for tomorrow's VBS. Afterwards we went to the waterfront to look at the scenery. It much like Vancouver, but a bit quieter.

Tomorrow, there will be 5 more kids and our host Rachel will be calling up past VBS kids. Also, there may be a gale storm coming up (and apparently Karen's excited about it...), so that may be something for the next designated blogger to write about. Also, the next blogger may talk more in depth about what happened during the trip, and he or she may upload images we took during VBS (I'm too lazy to do it right now). This is David Ko, signing out.
